Ketones in urine

Good day. Why is this happening? Someone says that the body has already started using ketones as fuel. What do you say?

Hello mild ketosis really starts at 0.5 mmol. But the urine test has drawbacks:

  • Less accurate as medication, vitamin C, and even diet can affect it;
  • Ketones are released into urine only 3-4 hours after they appear in the body;
  • Ketones can be present in urine up to 2 days after they are no longer produced;
  • It is impossible to determine exactly when the ketones were formed.

So it's better to measure ketones in your blood. Also monitor for the following physical symptoms that indicate that you are in ketosis:

  • Increased urination... Keto is a natural diuretic, so you need to use the toilet more. When urinating, acetoacetate, a ketone body, is excreted from the body, which can increase the number of trips to the toilet.
  • Dry mouth... Increased urination leads to dry mouth and increased thirst. Make sure you drink plenty of water and replenish electrolytes (salt, potassium, magnesium).
  • Bad breath... Acetone is a ketone body that is partially released in your breath. It can smell like ripe fruit or nail polish remover. Usually, this is a temporary phenomenon that will soon pass.
  • Reduced hunger and increased energy... Typically, after you overcome the "keto flu" (adaptation period), you will experience much lower hunger levels and a "clear" or tense mental state.
